Why Your Money Mindset Might Be Draining Your Energy (and How to Fix It)
From The Energised Entrepreneur Podcast, with Money Coach & Financial Strategist, Emilie Nutley.
Let’s be honest. You can drink the smoothies. You can take the supplements. You can even go on that yoga retreat in Portugal.
But if your nervous system is fried from constant money stress, no green juice is going to save you.
Your money mindset isn’t just a spreadsheet problem. It’s a stress response problem.
You’re not bad with money. You’re in survival mode.
Ever opened your bank app, saw money sitting there, and still felt your chest tighten?
That’s your nervous system reacting to perceived scarcity.
Emilie revealed in our episode (that left me shook) that your brain doesn’t know the difference between being broke and feeling financially unsafe. Whether you’ve got £30 or £3,000 in the bank, if your internal system is screaming “not enough,” your body responds like it’s under threat.
And when your body is under threat, everything else - your gut health, hormone production (therefore your cycle), sleep, focus, and ability to show up for your business suffers.
Why financial fear feels so physical.
No offence… But your brain is ancient.
It’s wired for survival, not Stripe notifications. So when money stress hits, whether it’s a surprise tax bill or a slower sales month, your amygdala (your brain’s panic button) gets activated. That throws your body into fight-or-flight.
Cue:
→ brain fog
→ shallow breathing
→ skipped meals
→ over-caffeination
→ all the classic signs of burnout
You might put it down as a stressful week, but it’s actually your body being stuck in sympathetic mode.
The cost of “frivolous” spending (and why it’s gendered)
Let’s talk about the F-word, because I loved Emilie’s take on being ‘frivolous’ with money.
She pointed out that the word ‘frivolous’ is never used when a man spends money. Only women. Potentially born from the incredibly outdated way of living, with the breadwinning men and the housewives spending money that isn’t their own. Whatever the origin, it’s constantly reaffirming the belief that women are ‘bad’ and ‘silly’ at managing their own money.
The moment you hit “pay now,” the guilt creeps in. You tell yourself: I shouldn’t have. That was irresponsible. I’m bad with money. And just like that, your nervous system contracts. You go from joyful to judging. From abundance to anxiety.
Emilie reminds us in the episode, that you are allowed to spend money on joy. You are allowed to feel good about spending money you earned. Because when your financial decisions come from a place of self-trust instead of shame, your whole nervous system breathes a little easier.
Your breakfast routine and your budgeting habits have more in common than you think
Let’s bring it back to the plate (because you know I was going there). Skipping breakfast and skipping your financial self-check-ins? Same outcome: low energy, poor decision-making, and that nagging “I’m not doing enough” feeling.
Just like your body needing consistent meals to feel safe, your nervous system needs a nourishing money routine to feel grounded. One that isn’t built on restriction, guilt, or shame, but on clarity, calm, and confidence.
That might look like:
Setting a CEO pay-day, even if it’s just £100.
Reframing your spending as support, not sabotage.
Rewriting the story that success means self-sacrifice.
Because you are your most important business asset. And you deserve to feel well-fed—physically, emotionally, and financially.

Because word on the street is that we can develop money mindsets from just 7 y/o, so when it comes to being solely responsible for earning, spending, saving, and investing our money as adults, it's no surprise that most of us struggle to get a grip on it.
